Volvo Cars and its Chinese owner Geely have postponed plans to float shares in the Swedish carmaker, blaming trade tensions and a downturn in automotive stocks. But while Volvo’s plans for a Stockholm listing were delayed indefinitely, Britain’s Aston Martin vowed to push ahead with its own initial public offering.
“We’ve come to the conclusion that the timing is not optimal for an IPO right now,” Volvo Chief Executive Hakan Samuelsson told Reuters by telephone on Monday, confirming a decision which was first reported by the Financial Times.
Volvo and its Chinese parent had been discussing an IPO to value the carmaker at between $16 billion and $30 billion, sources have previously said. The company said a listing was still possible in the future.

I’ve been debating whether or not to invest in auto companies the last couple weeks.
I trade on Robinhood and they recently added some global companies like BMW, Honda, etc.
Outside of minimal, but
consistent Y/Y growth for most companies
and dividends, are there any benefits to adding automotive companies to your portfolio?
with tariff talks crushing my technology stocks, it seems risky to get into automotive as well.

I don’t think owning any car stock is wise right now. From their debt levels are well above a normal manufacturer’s carry, to countless headwinds (rising rates, trade wars/tariffs , etc).

I’m pretty cheap anyway. We should be looking at picking up Saab instead, it can’t be that expensive right?

I contemplated TSLA a few years back but I was put off by all the volatility, but the big risk came with big rewards until recently .
I trade on Robinhood as well but only whatever spare cash I have, most of my investments are in Index funds even if don’t consider my 401Ks . Yup, when they announced the foreign stocks I checked out all the automotive ones because those are the companies I know most about. None are too attractive.
I own GM on Robinhood - just 5. B ut I am in it for the long term , thought they were better than FCA & Ford and I bought it because it was cheap. They have been hit pretty hard by tariffs as well, if you’re a short term investor it has been brutal. I am curious about Aston Martin but check out Ferrari. They are doing quite well.

The other option is to look for companies that supply automotive parts as they have potentially diversified their risk unless there is a global industry turn down , and even they are affected by tariffs and sometimes raw material costs nevertheless.

$45, yes, $45B, no (I don’t think we have a billion Oppos to spread it around) . But I don’t need the aircraft company (I wouldn’t say no to a Draken or Gripen if someone wanted to give me one though). But really it shouldn’t cost that much for the cars. I think those rights are still owned by NEVS, but even if they ever actually get their electric 9-3s out the door, they aren’t even going to use the Saab branding. Seems like we should be able to pick up something cheap.

You just missed an opportunity for exactly that last week.
TSLA was down to the $260 range. But today it shot up over $20... which I’m guessing is due to sales data coming out.

Nah man, Never buying TSLA don’ t care how much the lost opportunity is . I am too risk- averse for all the craziness that goes on with that stock. Rather put it in some steady growth dividend payout companies like I have now.
